The Complete Guide on How to Adopt a Pet in The Sims 4

So many have been asking, and I’m surprised a more comprehensive guide hasn’t been written yet, but here it is! Your complete guide on how to adopt a pet in The Sims 4. Buckle in.

There are several methods to add or adopt a pet to your Sims family:

Create-a-Pet
Adopt a Stray
Call the Adoption Service
Use the Gallery
Adopt from Project Simmy!

I. Create-a-Pet

Obviously, the most common way to add a pet to a new Sims family is to use the create-a-pet screen. Similar to the create-a-sim screen, this is where you’ll create a pet that you want to add to your family. You can customize their name, traits, the sound of their bark, the color and patterns of their fur, get a mixed breed pup from two breeds, and even paint your pet to look like whatever you want.

To do this, do the following:

1. When starting a new game or new family, you’ll load up Create-a-Sim! The familiar character builder.

2. Select “Add a pet” and then choose cat or dog.

3. Customize your pet the way you see fit. Give them traits, modify the sound of their bark, paint their coat, all of it!

4. You’ll then have them added to your family the same way you would a sim. Just save and play!

II. Adopt a Stray

Stray pets are abundant, especially in Brindleton Bay, so it makes sense that you may be considering adopting a stray when looking into how to adopt a pet in The Sims 4. Whether it be a dog or a cat, you’re likely to run across several in your tenure around the neighborhood.

To adopt a stray in The Sims 4, you will need to:

1. If a stray animal, cat or dog, wanders into your yard, go say hello!
2. Ply the pet with treats, attention, and lots of snuggles to build a relationship with it.
3. Once you’ve built up enough of a friendship, trust and understanding with your new friend, you can then ask it to join your family permanently!

III. Call the Adoption Service

This is probably one of the easiest ways to adopt a pet in The Sims 4.

To use the pet adoption service, you can:

1. Using a phone or your computer, find and select the Hire a Service button.
2. Call the Pet Adoption Center and inform them of which pet you’d like to adopt.
3. Greet the adoption agent when she shows up at your house with your new pet’s kennel.
4. Pay the adoption agent $200 and agree to adopt your new pet!

IV. Use the Gallery

Another very simple way to adopt a pet in The Sims 4 is to just browse the gallery! The gallery is always full of great user-created content, and pets are no exception. You can even find some of Project Simmy’s pets there!

To adopt a pet from the gallery, give this a shot:

1. Enter the gallery from the Create-a-Sim page
2. Go nuts! Search for a pet that really speaks to you that you’d like to adopt.
3. Download and add your pet to the game.
4. Place them into the family by either merging it from the gallery, or placing it from the world editor!

V. Adopt a pet from Project Simmy!

Of course, this is our biased preference! All of our pets are sure to make excellent additions to your Sims families, and when it comes to adopting a pet in The Sims 4, Project Simmy is probably one of the most unique ways to do so.
